Prep

  • Do come prepared. Take the time to look at the schedule, understand what will be happening, where it is located, who might be there, and what opportunities might be available to you.

  • Signed up for the portfolio reviews or mock interviews? Even if you don’t have your portfolio complete yet or aren’t looking for an internship or full-time position, this is a safe space to practice these skills one-on-one with professionals. They took time out of their work day to meet you!

Network

  • Networking is more than just talking to people. It’s about actually showing up, being present, and giving as much as you want to get.

  • Utilize soft moments. Connect with people who are in your group for Tours or sitting near your table during the Panel Breakfast.

  • Stay connected. Reach out to them on LinkedIn and social media and keep building your network.

Practice

  • It’s true, practice does make perfect. And nobody is perfect, so always keep practicing! Practice different presentation or interview techniques and see what works best for you.

  • Get comfortable with networking with professionals and your peers. You never know who will be the connection to the next step in your career.

  • Be vulnerable, be humble, and take opportunities that will help you see what you’re made of. Not every experience on your route is going to be a great one, but you’ll find out where you fit and where you don’t.

Passion

  • As creatives, others can easily see when we get passionate about our work or something that inspires us. Lead with that passion and energy.

  • Understand your “why.” Why are you doing stuff? This can help in telling your story, whether it is through your designs and images in your portfolio or when talking with professionals about where you’d like to see yourself.
